Varicose vein preoperative skin marking is the process of marking the location of varicose veins on the skin before surgery. This is done using a waterproof pen to outline the veins and highlight areas of concern. Varicose veins can be difficult to identify when a patient is lying down, making it hard to plan the surgical approach. Preoperative marking ensures the surgeon can accurately locate and treat the veins during the procedure.

Preparation for the ultrasound

There is no patient preparation needed for this scan which will take up to 20 minutes for a single leg. We will require you to remove your shoes, socks and trousers/shorts. Very loose shorts, dresses and skirts don't need to be removed and can be lifted out of the way. We will ask for you to lay on the examination bed or be in a standing position on the ground. We will use a surgical pen to mark the skin in which location depends on the Doctors request. The procedure is painless and will involve the sonographer applying a gel to your skin and moving the transducer over the area of the veins.
